Being a quipping site icon has its advantages. For one thing, the commute's short.
Link bucket: More on this whole Internet thing

Links with longer shelf life and less cholesterol than fried butter, as if that's hard:
- Bakersfield paper may shutter community sites: Or may not, depending on which local executive you believe, and which lines you read between, in this PaidContent report.
- For e-book readers, the price is not right: Eight years ago, I was a product manager for the last generation of e-reader devices. I love this: Amazon still has them listed, and the SKU has old user comments such as this gem: "I really believe that this device, the RCA REB1100, represents the future of reading." You know what they use REB1100s for now? Newspaper carrier throw lists.
- A valid non-JavaScript lightbox: Nice work, just right for all the talented but persnickety Web designers out there.
- SEO lessons from Google News: More nice work, just right for all the talented but persnickety editors out there.
- How to develop the Facebook strategy you need: Practical tips on social media strategerizing for news organizations from Dorian Benkoil.
- Advanced Photoshop for Web designers, Part 1 and Part 2: Watch as these widgets start showing up everywhere.
- Newsies turn to "list journalism" for traffic: Next week I'll give you 10 reasons why.
- Twitter scales the "peak of inflated expectations": Now careening into the Valley of the Income Statement.
- Are 15- to 24-year-olds cooling on social networks?: Sure they are, now that we're all in there.

Oh my, Jay, this possible closing of Bakotopia et.al, as told to me by John Wells, has created quite a stir - even in-house. I do get that social is not all about the bottom line but if it has been five years, and these sites's costs still exceed their revenue in this economy something probably has to give. It might not be closing them - it might be using them differently or marketing them differently or introducing new revenue-producing products on their site. It would seem that something has to give.
